While making dinner this week, I thought of all the stupid things I do... even though I know they're stupid.

That non-exhaustive list includes:
  • Cooking bare foot. I'm one dropped knife away from losing a toe.
  • Walking while looking at my phone. I’ve rolled and/or twisted my ankle more than once.
  • Working out bare foot. I don’t want to clomp on our downstairs neighbor but I do lose ankle support.
  • Going for walks on humid days without water. This is a recipe for heat exhaustion.
  • Keeping passwords on Post-Its. Not exactly secure...
  • Moving furniture or other heavy things while alone. Just asking for an injury here.
  • Climbing on the counter to reach an upper cabinet instead of getting our stepladder. Laziness wins out over safety.
  • Eating food I know has been sitting out too long. Despite having had food poisoning before...
  • Parking under iffy trees before storms cause a safer spot was too far away. Again, laziness wins out over smarts here.

What stupid things are you guilty of doing?

  • I am now tempted to spend stupid money on a coat of arms. [The Atlantic - gift link]
  • SEO-ification of generative AI. [The Atlantic - gift link]
  • Pairing wines with BBQ. [Wine Folly]
  • What we're actually doing with AI. [HBR - may be paywalled]
  • The berry budget. [WaPo - gift link]

  • I found something fun I need to try in my city. [Atlas Obscura]
  • How Vegas is managing its water. [City Cast]
  • Amazing stories are held in archival files. [100 Objects]
  • Can we really know our inner selves? [Short Wave]
  • How to get back into reading. [Life Kit]

  • The husband turned on ISS because it was on our watch list. I have no memory of who put it there, but I'm glad one of us did. The story spins on the idea of what could happen on the space station when Russia and the US are at nuclear war. This turned out to be an exceptional film. (Although it helped that I had no expectations) It's a small cast with great acting. The special effects and details really bring this one together. [Amazon Prime]
  • Kate Winslet can do no wrong in my book but Lee is textbook biopic. The storytelling is pat and the staging is nothing special. The highlight for me was Andy Samberg. He is a revelation playing against his normal comedic type. Not a bad movie, but not one I would call good either. [Hulu]
  • We continued our documentary list clear out with Cleopatra's Final Secret. This follows one archaeologists quest to find her tomb. Spoiler alert - they don't find it. But, I see where she's going with her thinking and she's on to something. [Hulu]
  • When I put The Dark Side of Everest on our documentary list, I did not realize it was from the early 00s. I was distracted by the 4:3 aspect ratio and grainy footage. A lot has been filmed on/about Everest. This documentary looks at the ethics of humanity on the mountain. What do you do when someone is in trouble? [Amazon Prime]

  • We haven't had gnocchi in a few weeks so I made butter parmesan gnocchi with summer vegetables. I like to roast the gnocchi instead of boiling. It gives the pasta a firmer texture which is a good contrast with the sauteed vegetables. [Two Peas & Their Pod]
  • Kiddo requested tacos as her meal this week. To mix things up, we went of hard shells for the first time in over a decade. We were reminded of why we prefer soft tortillas! The hard shells felt stale and things fell apart after a few bites. [Old El Paso]
  • For my lunch meal prep, I mixed up herby chickpea feta pasta salad. This one is very much like all of my other Greek-flavor adjacent bean/pasta salads... with one exception. This recipe calls for pickled red onions. I will eat pickled red onions on anything. That was a HUGE flavor oomph. [Ambitious Kitchen]
